“First and foremost, we want to thank Wil for his seven years of contributions on and off the field while a member of the First Team of Crew SC,” said Crew SC President and General Manager Tim Bezbatchenko. “This was certainly a difficult decision to make, but headed into the final year of Wil’s contract, we were presented with an opportunity that we felt would mutually benefit both the Club and the player.”

Continued Bezbatchenko: “Wil represented his hometown Club and country proudly during his time with Crew SC and continues to serve as a model for a path to the professional level through the Academy system. As he enters the next chapter of his career, we truly wish him the best and appreciate what he has meant to Columbus.”

A Crew SC Academy product, Trapp signed a Homegrown Player contract with Crew SC on December 13, 2012. In 2013, his rookie season, Trapp made 16 regular-season appearances (all starts) and provided one assist en route to earning the Crew’s Breakout Performance of the Year award. The following year he was named team Vice Captain and went on to make 28 regular-season appearances (all starts), scoring one goal and registering four assists. Trapp also played in the inaugural MLS Homegrown Game as a part of the 2014 MLS All-Star Game festivities.

In 2015, Trapp made 19 regular-season appearances (17 starts) and was a pivotal player in Crew SC’s run to MLS Cup as he started in all five of the team’s MLS Cup Playoff matches. The following year, the midfielder made 30 regular-season appearances (29 starts) while notching one assist. That same season, Trapp was named to the 2016 MLS All-Star Game roster, becoming the first Crew SC Academy product in Club history to receive that honor. 2017 saw Trapp be named team Captain, and the midfielder went on to register 3,035 regular-season minutes of action – more than any other player that season – as he made a career-high 34 regular-season appearances (all starts) and recorded a career-high of five assists while helping the Black & Gold reach the Eastern Conference Championship.

Trapp made 30 regular-season appearances (29 starts) for the Crew in 2018, with the midfielder tallying one goal and one assist. Also in 2018, Trapp was named Crew SC’s Humanitarian of the Year for his work in the Columbus community. This past season, the midfielder made 28 regular-season appearances, providing four assists. In all, Trapp made 185 regular-season appearances (179 starts) while recording two goals and 19 assists for the Black & Gold during his seven seasons in Columbus. He leaves the Crew as the player with the fifth-most regular-season matches started, fifth-most regular-season minutes played (15,934), and as the player with the seventh-most regular-season matches played.

At the international level, Trapp has earned 20 caps for the U.S. Men’s National Team since making his debut in a 2015 friendly against Chile (January 28). The midfielder most recently started for the U.S. in a friendly against Mexico (September 6, 2019). Trapp had previously featured for the U.S. at the Under-14, U-15, U-18, U-20 and U-23 levels. In 2013, he was named U.S. Soccer’s 2013 Young Male Athlete of the Year.

Crew SC’s 2020 MLS preseason continues with the Black & Gold currently in Cancun, Mexico before traveling to Tucson, Arizona on February 10 to participate in the 2020 Visit Tucson Sun Cup.

The Black & Gold begin the 2020 MLS regular season at MAPFRE Stadium against New York City FC, on Sunday, March 1 at 12:30 p.m. ET.
