Afful, Mensah set for AFCON semifinals with Ghana

Ghana

Via Saturday's 2-1 final score in the Africa Cup of Nations quarterfinal between Ghana and the DR Congo, Ghana qualified for its sixth consecutive semifinals appearance in the tournament. Columbus Crew SC teammates Harrison Afful and Jonathan Mensah advanced with their Black Stars to face Cameroon in a semifinal clash on Thursday (2 p.m. ET).
Cameroon outlasted Senegal 5-4 in penalties after a scoreless regulation and extra time on Sunday for a semifinal qualification.

Four-time champion Ghana is playing for its first continental trophy since 1982. Ghana has fallen in three finals and four semifinals in the three-and-a-half decades since, including a heart-breaking defeat via penalty shootout to Ivory Coast in the last African Cup of Nations final.

The memory of that last AFCON final has Ghana playing well with a pair of 1-0 wins having come over Uganda and Mali in group play and Saturday's 2-1 quarterfinal victory.

Cameroon enters the semifinals with an unbeaten 1-0-3 record and a narrow 3-1 goal differential. Through four matches, Cameroon has posted two cleansheets through regulation â€” plus a scoreless 30-minute extra time period in the quarterfinals.

Thursday's semifinal is set for Stade de Franceville in Gabon. It will be broadcast on BeIN Sport starting at 2 p.m. ET.
