Preseason Scrimmage: Columbus Crew SC 2 – Seattle Sounders FC 1

Jonathan Mensah CLBvSEA Preseason Scrimmage 2-4-18

Crew SC took on the Seattle Sounders in a preseason scrimmage, on Sunday, February 4. The match was the Black & Gold’s second scrimmage of 2018 and featured different lineups in each half.

Crew SC’s first-half lineup featured newly acquired player Ricardo Clark as well as Crew SC Academy player Colin Biros. Biros made an impact in the match early on, as he managed to get on the end of a low cross from Niko Hansen in the fifth minute to give the Black & Gold a 1-0 lead.

Zack Steffen was called into action in the 22nd minute, when Victor Rodriguez fired off a shot form inside the box that Steffen did well to save. Six minutes later, Seattle capitalized on a counter as Rodriguez went on a breakaway to level the score. The match was played on even terms for the remainder of the first half, and both teams headed into the locker room at half time with the match still tied 1-1.

In the second half, the Black & Gold’s new lineup came under fire, but the backline held steady. In the 49th minute, Logan Ketterer managed to intercept a cross in the air before Henry Wingo could get his head on it. Seven minutes later, Adam Jahn managed a shot on target at the other end, but Bryan Meredith parried it out for a corner kick.

In the 70th minute, Jahn was fouled on the edge of Seattle’s box, earning a free kick. Pedro Santos took the free kick, but Calle Brown managed to save the shot. Santos would come through eight minutes later, when he crossed a ball into the box after receiving a pass from Hector Jimenez. Jahn then managed to get his foot on it to put Crew SC ahead once again.

The Sounders refused to give up, however, pressing the attack. Zach Mathers fired off a shot in the 86th minute, but Ketterer sent it out for a corner kick, preserving Crew SC’s lead. The Black & Gold managed to resist Seattle’s attack, walking away 2-1 winners. Click here to see photos from the scrimmage.
