Columbus Crew SC today selected three players in the first two rounds of the 2020 Major League Soccer SuperDraft presented by adidas. Crew SC held a SuperDraft viewing lunch for Season Ticket Members at MAPFRE Stadium. The Black & Gold selected forward Miguel Berry (University of San Diego) with the seventh overall pick in Round 1. In Round 2, Crew SC selected goalkeeper Remi Prieur (Saint Mary’s College) with the 21st pick (47th overall) and midfielder Danny Griffin (Providence College) with the 23rd pick (49th overall).
Berry played made 72 appearances (69 starts) for the University of San Diego while registering 38 goals and 16 assists from 2016-2019. In 2016, his freshman year, he made 18 appearances (15 starts), scoring eight goals and providing one assist while being named to the West Coast Conference (WCC) All-Freshman Team. During his sophomore year, Berry made 17 appearances (all starts), recording five goals and five assists en route to being named to the All-WCC First Team as well as to the United Soccer Coaches (USC) All-Far West Region Second Team.
In 2018, his third year with the University of San Diego, Berry made 19 appearances (all starts), tallying eight goals and two assists while earning All-WCC First Team and USC All-Far West Region Second Team honors. In his senior year, 2019, the forward made 18 appearances (all starts) while netting 17 goals – tied for second-most goals in a single-season for the University of San Diego – and providing eight assists.
For his performance in the 2019 season, Berry was named the WCC Co-Player of the Year and he was a semifinalist for the MAC Hermann National Player of the Year award. Additionally, the forward also earned a spot in the following teams: the USC All-America Second Team, the All-WCC First Team, the USC Scholar All-American First Team, the USC All-West Region First Team, and the College Sports Information Directors of America All-American Third Team.
Prieur, a goalkeeper, played for Saint Mary’s College from 2015-2019. After redshirting his freshman year in 2015, Prieur featured prominently for Saint Mary’s and helped lead the Gaels to the WCC Championship for the second time in program history in 2018.
Griffin made 80 appearances (all starts) while scoring 13 goals and providing six assists for Providence College from 2016-2019. Notably, the midfielder was named to the USC Division I All-Great Lakes Region Third Team and the Big East All-Freshman Team in 2016.
The 2020 MLS SuperDraft resumes with Rounds 3 and 4, conducted via conference call on Monday, January 13. The Black & Gold currently hold the seventh pick (59th overall) in Round 3, as well as the seventh pick (85th overall) in Round 4.
Crew SC’s 2020 MLS preseason training begins on January 20 in Chula Vista, California, following entrance physicals and testing. From there, the club departs to Cancun, Mexico on January 29 before traveling to Tucson, Arizona on February 10 to participate in the 2020 Visit Tucson Sun Cup.
